Palomas is one of the most residential areas in the city of Madrid, and it is located in the capital’s northeast.

The neighbourhood can be divided into three areas, the first is Colonia Piovera, between Calle de Guadalajara and Calle de la Espirea, and between highway A-2 and Calle de las Azaleas. You can still see some of the original characteristics of the concept of this area, like tree-lined streets and single-family houses on a small plot.

The second area is Colonia Palomas, between Calle de Guadalajara and motorway M-40. Some of the remainders of the nature of this urban colony are still there.

The third area is Barriada Arroyo del Santo. This zone, in the surroundings of Avenida de los Andes, was the last to be developed. It is modern, with wide streets and high buildings, but it also has parks and green zones.

What to see in the neighbourhood of Palomas in Madrid

Some of the most interesting places in Palomas (in the district of Hortaleza) are its spiritual centers.

First of all there is La Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de las Américas (the Church of Our Lady of the Americas) on Calle de Peonias. This red-brick building was built in the 90s to provide the neighbourhood with a church, as masses previously had taken place in a small building at Calle de Guadalajara. The impressive wooden star in the roof is supported by concrete beams.

Another place of interest is El Monasterio de la Natividad del Señor (the Monastery of the Nativity of the Lord), where at the end of the 70s a community of Benedictine Sisters was established. The Sisters are well-known for their paint and iconography workshop. Above the presbytery of the monastic church you can see the "Pantocrator de Canillejas", which was painted by a Greek iconographer in 1985.
